Prof. Shahzad Jalandhari

That day I saw Sohan Lal talking with an educated Muslim prisoner. When the man was gone I asked Sohan Lai who he was. Sohan Lal got into a long harangue: "In every big city of Pakistan one would come across women in large numbers on the roads, at bus stands, in brothels and in private houses who are out to sell their bodies. Despite such easy accessibility to women, of all the countries of Asia, homosexuality is most prevalent in Pakistan. The practice of keeping 'gigolos' or 'boys' first started in the land of the Pathans and gradually spread to Sind, Baluchistan, Punjab and all over Pakistan. Seventy per cent of the men of the army are prey to it. Among the Pathans, one who does not have a 'boy' loses in prestige. Every rich Khan keeps his 'boy' lavishly decked out and embellished like girls – long curly hair, a black streak of kajal across his eyes. So much so; that even murders would take place on account of 'boys'. A Khan may leave his wife alone, but he would never keep his 'boy' out of sight. Even while saying his namaz he would make him sit at some distance from him. He is always assailed by the fear lest some one may elope with his 'boy'. Because of this dirty habit twenty-five per cent of the people suffer from venereal diseases, so it is said."

As I learnt, this Prof. Shahzad Jalandhari of Lahore was one such romantic soul. He had taken fancy to a young son of a Colonel. One day he saw the boy coming out of the school and he lost his heart to him. He patted his check, said some nice words to him, asked him his address and gave him his own. Then he took the boy to a restaurant and entertained him lavishly. Children are hungry for affection and this innocent child could not see the devil that was peeping out of the man's heart. They started meeting every day. All the time the Professor was thinking of how to have his way with the boy.

One day the boy left home in the morning and did not return till ten at night. The Colonel's jeep raced through all the roads in search of the boy. At last he managed to get the Professor's address from a friend of his son. When the Colonel reached the Professor's house he found both the Professor and his son missing. They returned at one o'clock in a three-wheeler after a late night movie. The Colonel's batman who had stayed behind to keep watch over the house asked the boy to accompany him home but the boy refused, saying that he would come in the morning. The Colonel, terribly annoyed, rushed back in his jeep. The Professor said, "Your boy is very fond of me. I take great interest in his studies and therefore, sometimes he sleeps in my house."

The Colonel did not want to create a scene at that time and quietly took his son home.
